Ferguson Road was once known as the Kojonup Road. This tracked east from Dardanup through Ferguson, Wellington Mills, Lowden, Boyup Brook and to Kojonup. It was sometimes also called the Bunbury to Kojonup Road.
Kojonup has a history stretching back centuries to the days when the Kaneang language group of the Nyoongar people were first attracted to the area by the freshwater spring and abundance of game. The name Kojonup has historical significance, referring to the “Kodj” or stone axe made by the Aborigines from the local stone.
The road likely followed tracks originally used by the Kaneang people who migrated towards the coast in the summer and back towards Kojonup in the winter months.
